500 Books Before Middle School

You are here

Take the 500 Books Before Middle School Challenge!

Why should my child participate?
Reading regularly during elementary school sets the foundation for lifelong success—both academically and emotionally. Here’s why this program is worth the journey:
  • Build Strong Reading Habits: Kids who read regularly grow into confident readers.
  • Boost Brain Power: Reading a wide range of books strengthens vocabulary, comprehension, critical thinking, and imagination—all essential skills for school and beyond.
  • Improve Communication Skills: Through stories, kids learn how characters solve problems, express emotions, and interact with others—important tools for understanding the world and expressing themselves.
  • Explore the World Through Books: Books let kids travel to faraway places, learn about different cultures, meet inspiring characters, and explore big ideas—all from the comfort of a cozy chair.
  • It’s Fun!: Kids get to choose what they love—fantasy, mysteries, funny stories, graphic novels, nonfiction—it’s not homework, it’s an adventure!
How can we get started?
  1. Register for this program online or at your preferred branch. If you register online, be sure to pick up your starter packet at your preferred branch. Your packet will include initial reading log, reading suggestion pamphlets, and a bookmark.
  2. Each time your child finishes a book, record the book in your log. Books may be read and recorded more than once. You can also count the books your child hears in storytime, in daycare or school. Books can be from anywhere, not just the library!
  3. Bring your log(s) to the library. Your child will receive a sticker for each 50-book milestone. At some levels, they will also earn a small prize!
Milestone Rewards
While we fully believe that reading is it's own reward, we also want to celebrate your child's participation in this challenge!

  • 250 books: sticker, reading brag tag keychain
  • 400 books: sticker, tour of circulation desk, check out your family's books!
